Our grantmaking, studios, and events enable us to bring a holistic approach to supporting a future where climate change is tackled via inclusive, coordinated, and locally-led efforts.

Through our three areas of programming we strengthen local climate ecosystems, fund impactful place-based climate initiatives, and support climate and environmental justice leaders. This enables more equity-centered and community-driven climate change solutions, which supports local climate economies and communities, and ultimately, works to ensure a just, equitable, and climate-resilient future.

Our Grantmaking Impact

The Climate Fund Impact Report reflects on the significant outcomes of the first full one-year grant cycle of Phase One of CIV:LAB’s Climate Fund, which took place in New York City and the State of Michigan. From 2023-24 CIV:LAB distributed $755,000 to 14 climate initiatives, benefiting over 167,459 people through environmental advocacy and stewardship, youth and professional development, urban agriculture and food justice, and community climate resilience.

CIV:LAB’s Climate Fund model responds to critical funding needs within the climate community with a three-pronged approach:

1

Participatory grantmaking

2

Place-based focus

3

Unrestricted funding

The unique structure of the funding, including unrestricted capital coupled with grantee support, enabled grantees to further their work and local presence in essential ways

Increased Capacity

Community Engagement

Partnerships

and new collaborations were facilitated allowing grantees to expand their reach

Thought Leadership

We’re placing our interns in opportunities within the Bronx that we would not have had the connection to if it hadn’t been strengthened through the community that CIV:LAB is creating… As you know, the (funding) is great…but the sense of community and the shared strength that comes from it is almost more valuable.

Tim Gilman

Executive Director, RETI Center

The way CIV:LAB engages with grantees is unlike a traditional funder-grantee relationship. You feel more like colleagues; CIV:LAB wants to learn about what we are doing and shows solidarity.

CIV:LAB gave me an opportunity – in my own city – to prove my capabilities. It gave me a voice and I appreciate that. We’ve been in the environmental business for many years, but our new venture, funded by CIV:LAB, is the first time we have been seen in the industry
